The Climbing Team

Rand and Larry

Rand McNeely
Rand (top left) has been climbing in New England's White Mountains since his teenage years, and formally took up ice climbing and high altitude mountaineering in the early 1990s. Climbing in the Appalachians, Canadian Rockies, Alaska Range, and Swiss Alps, Rand leads ice at NEI Grade 3, and has extensive backcountry and large face route experience. He took up expedition videography in 1996 while employed at WGBH-TV, producers of Nova and many IMAX titles. Moving from Hi-8 to DV and soon to HDV, he edits on Final Cut Pro, and his work includes mountaineering, instructional, and documentary productions.

Larry Takiff
Larry (top right) not only introduced Rand to Woody's Sayre's book, but was also present at the 2001 reunion. He and Rand have been climbing together for over ten years on long routes from New Hampshire's Presidential Range to Canada and Alaka. He has also cliimbed in Bolivia and on hard routes throughout the Cascades. With a knack both for logistical planning and route-finding in icefalls, Larry will find many key roles in the reenactment.

Curtis Cote
A paramedic with high altitude climbing experience in the Himalaya would be a godsend on such a remote route. Well, New England has produced one in Curtis, a world-wide adventurer with strong technical climbing skills. Long routes are his forte, and he is also a devotee of lightweight and self-contained expeditions.

One More Team Member

We are once again casting the net across America and even to Switzerland and Canada, looking for more capable high altitude mountaineers with longer expedition experience. We have a few names, but we are dedicated to building the best team possible and cogniscent of the need for back-up personnel. We are looking for people with Himalayan climbing experience, and possibly also with technical expertise in filmmaking, sound, or on-line expeditions. A Swiss climber would increase the historicity of this reeenactment, but we have already decided to cast the net into Canada and would welcome a female applicant.

Give a holler, and see what you could add to an amazing adventure in one of the most remote corners of the world. Two months of your life would give you a memory not likely to be foregotten, and likely embedded in an award-winning high-definition film.

Alternates
We are committed to beginning (and ending!) the planned Everest expedition with four team members, just as in 1962. This team size is ideal for a super-alpine expedition, and contributes both to speed and safety. Given the uncertainties of anyone's life schedule and personal health, we are maintaining an active alternates list, at least some of whom may accompany the team during the approach to Cho Oyu in Nepal and around Everest base camp in Tibet. This group is critical to making sure we can complete the reenactment with a fit and safe team. With safety and fairness in mind, we are also committed to accepting the full inclusion of five climbers if the alternative is to risk dropping below four.

We would be happy to see any of them with us on Everest. Perhaps, they will be.
